In honor of Throwback Thursday, I offer up an old cover of Creative Loafing, the newspaper I left last year. It's from 2013, and the North Carolina General Assembly was just starting to show its conservative ass. Writer John Grooms wrote a great story that revealed all the ways the state was regressing, and I, editor at the time, gave creative director Melissa Oyler the headline I was working with: "50 years of progress down the toilet." Here's what she came up with.
I've been thinking about this cover since the highly controversial and discriminatory N.C. House Bill 2 was signed into law. Who knew three years ago we'd practically predict North Carolina lawmakers would pass legislation about bathrooms.
Boy, do I miss working in a newsroom in North Carolina.
